Captain America: Brave New World has drawn praise from early screenings, with critics highlighting its diverse and compelling characters that set the stage for future surprises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Directed by Julius Onah, the film had its early industry screening on February 12. It marks the first time Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, officially takes on the mantle of Captain America following Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) retirement. In the film, Sam faces a complex challenge—protecting the President of the United States, played by Harrison Ford, who also happens to transform into the formidable Red Hulk.
Following the premiere, early reactions have been largely positive. Critic Chris Gallardo wrote, “Brave New World proves that Anthony Mackie is more than deserving of the Captain America title. His performance is strong, and his chemistry with Danny Ramirez is seamless. Harrison Ford as President Ross is captivating, and the action scenes are explosive.”
Washington Post’s Herb Scribner echoed this sentiment on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Another important MCU film that ties together previous installments.” Meanwhile, Wong Updates described the film as “thrilling and intense from start to finish—a blend of The Winter Soldier and The Dark Knight that keeps you on edge. Marvel’s magic is back.”
Supporting Cast Shines, But Story Falls Short
The supporting cast includes Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon, Giancarlo Esposito as the villain Sidewinder, and Shira Haas as government agent Sabra. Each delivers standout moments that have resonated with early viewers.
Ramirez has been praised for his portrayal of Captain America’s trusted ally, while Esposito brings gravitas to the action sequences, squaring off against the hero. Haas’s character starts off cold and aligned with the President but later becomes a secret ally to the heroes.
Despite the praise for performances, some critics believe the film’s script is its weakest link. Film critic Cris Parker described the story as lacking depth, while Emmanuel Noisette called Brave New World “disjointed,” criticizing its underdeveloped antagonist and giving it an average rating.
Blogger John Flickinger was even more critical, stating, “The film is clumsy, lacking major highs or gripping moments. The script doesn’t give the characters enough to do. As the 35th MCU film, it plays things too safe and lacks innovation.”
A Milestone for Anthony Mackie’s Captain America
Captain America: Brave New World is Anthony Mackie’s first leading role in an MCU film. He originally joined the franchise as Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).
At the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Steve Rogers bid farewell to his fellow superheroes, choosing to travel back in time and live out his life with Peggy Carter. Before departing, he entrusted his vibranium shield to Sam Wilson, officially passing down the Captain America legacy. Unlike Steve, Sam does not possess the super-soldier serum, but he relies on his advanced Wakandan technology suit to fight alongside Earth’s mightiest heroes.
While early reactions have been mixed regarding the script, Brave New World appears to deliver thrilling action and solid character work, positioning Sam Wilson as the MCU’s new Captain America.
