A winning ticket for the $1.22 billion Mega Millions jackpot, the fifth-largest in the game's history, was sold in California, according to the lottery company.
"Congratulations to the winner of the $1.22 billion jackpot from California. This truly is an incredible holiday gift," said Joshua Johnston, director of Mega Millions, on December 27.
The ticket was sold at a Circle K store in Shasta County, California, and matched all six winning numbers drawn on December 27: 3, 7, 37, 49, 55, and the Mega Ball number 6. The odds of winning the jackpot were one in 302 million.
Winner and Prize Options
The identity of the winner has not yet been disclosed. The winner can choose between a lump sum payment of $549.7 million or the full prize amount paid out over 29 years. Most winners opt for the lump sum.
This is the fifth-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history. The prize amount grew after no one won in the previous 30 drawings. The last jackpot-winning ticket, worth $810 million, was sold in Texas on September 10.
The largest jackpot in Mega Millions history was $1.6 billion, claimed by a ticket sold in Florida in August 2023. However, Powerball, another lottery, has awarded two jackpots even larger than this.
About Mega Millions and Future Changes
Mega Millions and Powerball tickets are sold in 45 U.S. states, as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Powerball tickets are also available in Puerto Rico.
Starting in April 2025, Mega Millions ticket prices are expected to increase from $2 to $5. The company states this change aims to improve odds, increase the frequency of large prizes, and boost jackpot values.
