Allies Pledge Nearly $24 Billion in New Military Aid to Ukraine
Led by the UK and Germany, the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) has announced a record-breaking $23.8 billion military aid package to support Ukraine’s ongoing war effort.
“This marks the largest single increase in military funding for Ukraine since the war began,” UK Defense Secretary John Healey said during a UDCG meeting in Belgium on Thursday.
Healey confirmed that the UK will contribute $5.8 billion this year—London’s biggest annual commitment to date. In a joint statement, the UK and Norway also unveiled a new bilateral support package valued at $585 million.
Germany outlined its own expanded support, which includes four IRIS-T air defense systems, 300 missiles, 30 Patriot interceptors, 15 Leopard 1A5 tanks, 25 Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles, around 130,000 rounds of 155mm artillery shells, and more. Berlin has pledged nearly $14.4 billion in military aid through 2029.
“This sends a clear message that support for Ukraine is not fading,” said Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene, who announced an additional $34 million in aid—bringing Lithuania’s 2024 contribution to $125 million, with more expected later this year.
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans added that the Netherlands will invest $170 million to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also urged allies to speed up delivery of advanced air defense systems, calling for at least 10 additional Patriot batteries to protect Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The UDCG, founded by the United States in 2022 to coordinate military aid for Ukraine, now includes 57 member nations—among them all 32 NATO countries. Though originally U.S.-led, leadership has shifted to the UK and Germany in recent months. Since its formation, the group has pledged a total of $126 billion in military assistance to Ukraine.
This latest commitment comes amid a sharp shift in U.S. foreign policy following President Donald Trump’s return to office in January. The Trump administration has yet to approve a new Ukraine aid package and has instead emphasized diplomatic efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict with Russia.
Speaking Thursday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov noted that European countries are now the leading providers of military support to Kyiv. Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrsky echoed that assessment, adding that U.S. assistance has significantly declined.
The April 11 UDCG summit was the first not chaired by the U.S. Secretary of Defense. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth attended remotely and delegated hosting duties to UK Defense Secretary Healey.
