Artist Fears for Career After Trump Slams Portrait as 'Terrible'
Sarah Boardman, the artist behind a 2019 official portrait of Donald Trump, says the former president’s harsh criticism of her work may now be harming her decades-long career.
“I completed the portrait accurately and without any intent to distort, show political bias, or convey satire—directly or indirectly,” Boardman said in a statement posted to her website on April 6. The British-born painter was commissioned by the Colorado state legislature to create Trump’s portrait, which hung for six years in the state Capitol in Denver alongside other presidential portraits.
Boardman said the painting had received positive feedback until Trump publicly denounced it last month on his Truth Social platform. “No one likes a bad portrait of themselves, but the one in Colorado’s Capitol is a deliberate distortion at a level rarely seen,” Trump wrote, calling it the “worst” among all portraits on display and comparing it unfavorably to the nearby portrait of Barack Obama—also painted by Boardman.
Trump went on to criticize Democratic Governor Jared Polis for allowing what he called a “horrible portrait” to hang in a government building, adding, “Jared should be ashamed of himself!”
Boardman pushed back, saying the accusations had hurt both her professional standing and personal reputation. “The claims that I intentionally distorted the image, or that I’ve lost my ability with age, have caused direct and potentially irreparable harm to the work I’ve been doing for over 41 years,” she wrote.
Although she didn’t detail how her career has been affected, Boardman said she would not make further comments on the issue.
Ironically, the portrait of Trump had been funded by Colorado Republicans, who raised more than $10,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to honor the then-president. Following Trump’s criticism, the portrait was removed at the request of Republican lawmakers, including State Senate Minority Leader Paul Lundeen, who argued it should be replaced with one that “better reflects the president’s current image.”
