President Joe Biden highlighted his administration's foreign policy achievements, claiming they have created significant opportunities for the United States and left a "tremendous advantage" for President-elect Donald Trump.
"I believe America is now more capable and better prepared to face challenges. While our adversaries grapple with difficulties, America is poised to sail ahead," Biden said during a January 13 speech at the State Department, one week before Trump returns to the White House.
Biden emphasized the importance of America maintaining strong global engagement and credibility with allies and partners.
"New challenges will emerge in the months and years ahead, but it's clear that my administration is leaving the next government with a very strong foundation to build upon," Biden stated. "America has reclaimed its leadership position."
A Call for Continuity
Biden urged the incoming Trump administration and Congress to continue pursuing cooperative policies over isolationism. He touted his bipartisan-supported foreign policy accomplishments, which he argued have strengthened America’s position and bolstered global security.
"Over the past four years, we haven’t wielded our power to act unilaterally but to unite nations, enhance collective security, and resolve issues through diplomacy wherever possible," Biden said. "America must fully seize the diplomatic and geopolitical opportunities we’ve created."
Biden reflected on the state of the U.S. when he assumed office in 2021, without directly referencing Trump. He noted that trust among allies had eroded, but his administration worked to rebuild alliances in Europe and the Indo-Pacific while investing in domestic manufacturing to mitigate external economic dependencies.
Challenges and Criticism
However, Biden did not address in detail the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, which saw the U.S.-backed Kabul government collapse and the Taliban take over before American forces completed their exit. The withdrawal drew widespread criticism for its disorganized execution and its impact on U.S. credibility.
Biden remarked that the decision to end the war would ultimately be judged by historians. "Ending the war was the right choice, and I believe history will reflect that," he said.
Trump’s Response
President-elect Trump dismissed Biden’s claims, criticizing his administration’s foreign policy record. "When you look at what’s happened over the past four years, I think it’s been the worst period in our country’s history," Trump said in an interview with Newsmax.
