Body Found in Landing Gear Compartment of U.S. Passenger Plane

A body was discovered in the landing gear compartment of a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Maui, prompting an investigation by authorities.

“The body was found in the wheel well of one of the main landing gears on a Boeing 787-10 aircraft when it arrived at Kahului Airport on the island of Maui, Hawaii, on December 24,” United Airlines stated on December 25.

Flight UA202 departed from Chicago, Illinois. “The landing gear compartment can only be accessed from outside the aircraft. It remains unclear how and when the individual gained entry,” the airline added.

United Airlines is cooperating with local law enforcement. Maui police have not yet commented on the incident, and officials have not released details about the victim or the cause of death.

Hiding in the landing gear compartment is a common method used by stowaways on planes. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), more than 77% of stowaways who attempt this method have died.

When the landing gear retracts, the compartment becomes extremely cramped. On many aircraft, the space is even smaller than the trunk of a car.

Conditions worsen as the plane ascends. Oxygen levels drop dramatically, making it difficult for stowaways to remain conscious. During the flight, external temperatures can plummet to -50 or -60 degrees Celsius, severely affecting blood circulation. Stowaways face a high risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
