Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Canada's Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party, stating he will leave office once a successor is chosen.
"I intend to step down as leader of the party and as Prime Minister," Trudeau, who has led the Canadian government since 2015, told reporters in Ottawa on January 6.
The announcement comes as Liberal Party lawmakers have increasingly pressured Trudeau to resign following polls indicating the party is likely to lose the upcoming federal election.
Canada's Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on January 27, and opposition parties have declared their intent to oust Trudeau’s government as soon as possible, potentially by late March. However, if Parliament does not meet by March 24, the earliest possible date for a no-confidence vote would be in May.
Trudeau stated he understood that in the upcoming election, he might not be the best choice if he faced internal competition within the Liberal Party. He emphasized that he would remain in office until the governing party selects his successor.
This means Trudeau will still be Canada’s Prime Minister on January 20, the day U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Trump has recently threatened to impose heavy tariffs on Canada, despite its status as one of America’s closest allies.
Trudeau, 53, took office in November 2015 and won re-election twice, becoming one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers. However, his popularity has waned over the past two years amid public frustration over rising costs of living and housing shortages.
Recent surveys suggest the Liberal Party would suffer a significant loss to the opposition Conservative Party in the next election, scheduled for October, regardless of who leads the Liberals.
The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, has gained substantial momentum. Poilievre rose to prominence in early 2022 for his support of truck drivers who staged protests in downtown Ottawa against COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
Trudeau's resignation sets the stage for a leadership race within the Liberal Party to select a candidate capable of challenging Poilievre in the next federal election.
