Car Plows Into New Year’s Crowd, At Least 10 Dead

At least 10 people were killed when a driver plowed into a crowd celebrating New Year’s Eve in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The driver sped into a crowd gathered after New Year’s celebrations on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. After crashing into the crowd, the suspect exited the vehicle and opened fire, prompting police on the scene to return fire.

New Orleans city officials confirmed that at least 10 people were killed and 30 others were transported to hospitals for treatment. CBS News reporter Kati Weis reported that many victims were treated on the sidewalk at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets.

The incident occurred at 3:15 AM on January 1 (local time). Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the attack as "intentional," ruling out drunk driving, and stated that the suspect clearly intended to "cause carnage." Two police officers were shot by the driver but are currently in stable condition.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell referred to the attack as an "act of terrorism" and stated that she had been in direct contact with the White House.

The FBI, leading the investigation, confirmed that the suspect was killed in a shootout with local police but has not yet released their identity. Authorities are working to determine the suspect's motive.

“All I saw was a car slamming into people on the left-hand side of the Bourbon Street sidewalk,” Kevin Garcia, 22, a witness, told CNN. “The impact was so strong that one person was thrown toward me,” he recounted, adding that he also heard gunshots.

Another witness, Whit Davis, 22, from Shreveport, Louisiana, said the incident occurred as he was leaving a nightclub on Bourbon Street, a popular tourist destination. "People started screaming and backing away, and then the nightclub doors were locked. Things calmed down, but they wouldn’t let us leave," he said. "When they finally let us out, police were waving people along and telling us to leave the area quickly. I saw a few bodies and dozens of people being treated."

Davis noted that police instructed those present not to take photos or videos and to leave the scene as quickly as possible.

New Orleans has witnessed similar incidents in the past during large gatherings. In November 2024, two people were killed and 10 others injured in two separate shootings along parade routes attended by thousands.

In February 2017, a driver showing signs of intoxication drove into a crowd watching a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, injuring more than 20 people.
