DHS Cuts $2.7 Million in Funding to Harvard Amid Rising Tensions With Trump Administration

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revoked over $2.7 million in federal grants to Harvard University, citing national security concerns and escalating tensions between the Ivy League school and the Trump administration.

“Harvard, through weak leadership, has bowed to antisemitism, enabled extremist violence, and compromised our national security,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem in an April 16 announcement. She confirmed that two federal grants to Harvard had been frozen.

One of the grants, worth more than $800,000, funded what DHS described as a “shockingly biased” study that allegedly labeled conservatives as “far-right dissidents.” The second, valued at over $1.9 million, supported what the agency called “Harvard’s public health propaganda efforts.”

“Both grants undermine American values and national security,” DHS said in a statement, adding that Secretary Noem has sent a letter demanding documentation of “illegal and violent activity” by Harvard’s international students on visas.

“As anti-American, pro-Hamas ideology spreads across Harvard’s campus, the university’s reputation as a top educational institution has become a thing of the past,” Noem stated. “The American people expect more from taxpayer-funded institutions.”

Harvard has not yet commented on DHS’s actions.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between Harvard and the Trump administration following a wave of student protests on campus last year over the Gaza conflict.

On April 15, the Department of Education’s Joint Task Force to Combat Antisemitism (JTFCAS) issued demands to Harvard, including reforms to its curriculum and admissions processes to address alleged antisemitic bias.

Harvard responded by expressing willingness to cooperate but criticized the demands as excessive government overreach that could allow federal authorities to “control the Harvard community” and undermine the university’s mission as a private institution dedicated to knowledge and academic freedom.

In response, the Trump administration announced it would freeze an additional $2.2 billion in federal aid to Harvard and demanded a formal apology from the university. The school’s broader access to government funding—estimated at $8.7 billion—as well as its tax-exempt status, could also be at risk if the conflict intensifies.

The administration has previously suspended hundreds of millions in federal grants to other universities as part of a broader campaign to pressure schools to combat antisemitism.
