U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, discussing topics including trade, TikTok, and other pressing matters.
“I just spoke with President Xi Jinping of China. It was a very good call for both the United States and China. I expect we will be able to address many issues together, starting immediately,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He added that the two leaders discussed trade, fentanyl, TikTok, and broader topics. “President Xi and I will do everything we can to make the world a more peaceful and safer place,” the president-elect emphasized.
Positive Signals from Beijing
China’s state broadcaster CCTV confirmed the call, reporting that Xi expressed optimism about a positive start to U.S.-China relations under Trump’s incoming administration.
“China and the U.S. share common interests and vast areas for cooperation. We can be partners and friends, achieve success together, and bring prosperity to both nations and the world,” Xi said. He acknowledged inevitable differences between the two powers due to their unique circumstances but stressed the importance of respecting each other’s core interests and resolving disputes constructively.
Xi also highlighted the mutual benefits of bilateral trade, reiterating that there’s no need for “confrontation or conflict.” This mirrors comments he made during Trump’s first term.
On Taiwan, Xi raised China’s concerns and urged the U.S. to handle the issue with care. The two leaders also touched on international and regional matters, including the conflicts in Ukraine and between Israel and Palestine.
CCTV reported that Trump expressed respect for his relationship with Xi and his hope to maintain open dialogue. Trump also said he looks forward to meeting Xi in person as soon as possible.
Historic Attendance at Inauguration
The call came after China announced that Vice President Han Zheng would attend Trump’s January 20 inauguration in Washington, marking the first time a senior Chinese official will attend a U.S. presidential inauguration. Previously, China typically sent ambassadors to such events.
Trade Tensions and Policy Outlook
During his first term, Trump launched a trade war with China, imposing heavy tariffs on Chinese imports. The president-elect has signaled even tougher measures in his upcoming term, accusing Beijing of unfair trade practices and contributing to the U.S. fentanyl crisis.
In December 2024, Xi stated that China is open to dialogue and cooperation with the U.S. but warned that no one wins in a trade war.
TikTok and Legislative Challenges
TikTok faces a January 19 deadline to sever ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or face a complete ban in the U.S. under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversaries Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), signed into law by President Joe Biden in April 2024.
Trump has recently voiced support for TikTok, sparking speculation that he may intervene to delay the ban. The Washington Post reported that Trump is considering an executive order to postpone enforcement by 60 to 90 days, though the legal basis for such a move remains unclear.
Divisive Rhetoric on China
In a Senate confirmation hearing on January 15, Marco Rubio, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, called China “the most dangerous equal adversary the U.S. has ever faced.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry later condemned Rubio’s remarks, urging the U.S. to “properly understand China and stop unfounded attacks and smears.”
Trump’s approach to China remains closely watched as he prepares to take office, with his early actions likely to set the tone for U.S.-China relations during his term.
