Donald Trump took the oath of office on January 20, becoming the 47th president of the United States. Due to frigid temperatures, the ceremony took place inside the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol instead of the traditional outdoor setting.
"I solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States," President Trump recited, guided by Chief Justice John Roberts.
A Historic Day in Washington
After taking the oath, Trump shook hands with Chief Justice Roberts and President Joe Biden, who was seated just a few steps away during the ceremony. As Trump arrived at the Capitol's Rotunda earlier in the day, he was greeted by cheers of "USA! USA!" and applause from the gathered crowd.
Standing beside Vice President JD Vance and facing Biden, Trump marked the beginning of his second term with a sense of triumph. Vice President Vance had earlier taken his own oath of office, swearing on a Bible belonging to his great-grandfather.
A Defining Inaugural Address
Trump delivered his inaugural address at the Capitol, declaring: "The golden era of America begins now." He promised a new chapter of prosperity, declaring the nation would no longer tolerate being taken advantage of by others.
"From this day forward, our country will grow stronger and regain respect across the globe," Trump said. "We will be the envy of every nation. We will no longer allow ourselves to be exploited—not under the Trump administration. Simply put, I will always put America first."
Trump also announced his intention to end what he called the "weaponization" of the Department of Justice. "The scales of justice will be balanced again," he said. "The brutal, violent, and unjust weaponization of our government ends today." He criticized the Biden administration for what he labeled political prosecutions and declared his return to the presidency as the start of "an exciting new era for America's success."
Tackling Domestic and International Issues
In his speech, Trump addressed immigration—a cornerstone of his new administration's agenda. He accused the Biden administration of failing to protect law-abiding citizens while offering sanctuary to dangerous criminals. "We have a government that provides unlimited funding to secure other nations' borders but refuses to protect our own," Trump said.
He also declared January 20 as "Liberation Day," calling the recent election "the greatest and most consequential in our nation's history."
Trump promised immediate action, including signing executive orders to declare a national emergency at the southern border, halt illegal immigration, reinstate the "Remain in Mexico" policy, and begin deporting millions of undocumented immigrants. He also vowed to focus on restoring U.S. manufacturing jobs, lowering costs, and addressing energy challenges through another national emergency declaration.
Reasserting American Control
Trump emphasized his commitment to reestablishing American authority over strategic assets like the Panama Canal, which he claimed was mismanaged by Panama. "We will take it back," he stated. He also reiterated his plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
First Actions as President
Following his address, Trump bid farewell to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. While the Biden family departed the Capitol as private citizens, Trump proceeded to sign his first executive orders as president in the Presidential Room at the Capitol.
The White House's official website was updated immediately after the ceremony, featuring a new layout and a bold headline: "America Is Back," accompanied by a prominent image of Trump.
