Earthquake in Tibet Kills at Least 95 People

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the Tibet region of China has claimed at least 95 lives and caused the collapse of numerous buildings.

The earthquake struck Dingri County in Tibet, near the border with Nepal, at 9:05 a.m. local time (8:05 a.m. Hanoi time), with the epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake’s magnitude as 7.1.

"Dingri County and surrounding areas experienced strong tremors, with many buildings near the epicenter collapsing," Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported. Numerous aftershocks followed the main quake, with the strongest registering at 4.4 magnitude.

Images shared in the media depict widespread destruction, with houses reduced to rubble, cracked walls, and debris scattered across the affected areas.

The southwestern region of China, along with Nepal and northern India, is prone to earthquakes due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

In 2008, a major earthquake in China's Sichuan province killed nearly 70,000 people. In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake near Kathmandu resulted in approximately 9,000 deaths, thousands of injuries, and became Nepal's deadliest quake in recent history.
