Israel Confirms Deployment of 120 Commandos to Raid Syrian Missile Factory

Israel has released video footage confirming it deployed 120 commandos to central Syria in September last year to destroy an underground missile factory in Damascus, allegedly funded by Iran.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on January 2 that on September 8, 2024, 120 Israeli commandos landed in Syria via helicopters, supported by airstrikes from fighter jets and naval firepower, as part of a raid in the Masyaf region of central Syria.

At the time, Bashar al-Assad was still president of Syria, and Israel had not yet launched its air campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. The underground facility in Masyaf contained advanced production lines for precision-guided missiles and long-range rockets intended for Hezbollah and other Iranian proxy groups, IDF spokesperson Nadav Shoshani stated. "Most components originated from Iran," he added.

According to Shoshani, the factory was built deep within a mountainside. Israel had been monitoring the facility since 2017. The factory reportedly produced hundreds of missiles annually, including some with ranges of up to 300 kilometers.

The IDF released a video showing Israeli commandos boarding helicopters, landing in Syria at night, and navigating reinforced concrete tunnels and industrial zones.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported in September that 27 people were killed in the Israeli raid. The IDF did not release casualty figures on January 2. According to SOHR, the facility was established and overseen by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iran condemned the raid in September as an "illegal act of aggression."

"This was one of the most complex operations the IDF has conducted in recent years. The troops dismantled the facility, completed the mission, and returned safely to Israel," Shoshani added. The IDF also transported key machinery and documents from the factory back to Israel for further investigation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the raid demonstrated Israel’s resolve to launch operations wherever necessary for self-defense.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi described the operation as part of a "series of courageous missions" carried out by Israel in the Middle East to "destroy the missile production capabilities of Iranian-affiliated groups."
