The White House announced on January 26 that the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire agreement, initially set to expire, has been extended until February 18, 2025, after Israel missed its January 26 deadline to withdraw troops.

"The agreement between Lebanon and Israel, brokered under U.S. supervision, will remain in effect until February 18, 2025," the White House stated.

The announcement did not mention France, which had partnered with the U.S. during the Biden administration to secure the ceasefire in Lebanon. The Trump administration indicated it would negotiate with Tel Aviv and Beirut for the release of Lebanese prisoners detained after October 7, 2023.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed the extension, saying the decision followed "consultations with the U.S., which is overseeing the agreement." He added that Israel’s failure to meet the withdrawal deadline prompted the move.

The ceasefire, first established in November 2024, ended Israel’s military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Under the 60-day agreement, Lebanese forces and U.N. peacekeepers were to take over security in southern Lebanon after Israel’s withdrawal.

In recent days, Israel has signaled reluctance to comply with the withdrawal timeline, accusing Lebanon’s military of failing to fulfill its obligations under the agreement.

On January 26, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported that Israeli forces opened fire on civilians returning to their homes in southern Lebanon, killing 22 people, including six women. Israel’s Ministry of Defense claimed it targeted "individuals posing a potential threat" to its forces.
