Israel Strikes Ports and Airports Across Yemen

Israel announced attacks on targets in Houthi-controlled areas, including the Yemeni capital Sanaa, the western coast, and deep into Yemen's territory.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated today that they struck "infrastructure used by the Houthi armed group for military purposes" at Sanaa International Airport, the Hezyaz power plant, and Ras Kanatib, as well as the ports of Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Issa on Yemen’s western coast.

“The Houthis used these facilities to transfer weapons and facilitate the movement of Iranian officials into the region,” the IDF said.

Tel Aviv described the operation as a response to recent Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting Israel. The airstrikes were approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. Netanyahu declared that airstrikes against the Houthis would continue "until the mission is complete," while Defense Minister Gallant vowed to "hunt down" all leaders of the group.

The Houthi movement reported that the strikes killed three people and injured or left 14 missing. Among the casualties, two were killed and 11 injured at Sanaa Airport, while one was killed and three went missing at Ras Issa port.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that Sanaa Airport was struck while he was preparing to board a flight. “A crew member was injured. At least two people at the airport were killed. The control tower, boarding area just meters from us, and the runway were damaged,” he wrote on social media.

The WHO chief added that he and his colleagues were unharmed but would have to wait for the runway to be repaired before departing.

Iran's Response

Iran, a key supporter of the Houthis, condemned Israel after the IDF announced the strikes.

“These acts of aggression blatantly violate international peace and security and constitute undeniable crimes against the people of Yemen—who are steadfast in their support of the oppressed Palestinian people resisting occupation and genocide,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated.

Recent Escalations

The airstrikes occurred a day after the Houthis launched a ballistic missile and two drones into Israeli territory. On December 21, the Houthis fired another ballistic missile at Tel Aviv, penetrating Israel’s multilayered air defense system and injuring 16 people.

In response, Netanyahu stated that he had directed the IDF to destroy Houthi infrastructure. The Yemeni armed group has launched repeated missile and drone attacks on Israel since the Gaza conflict erupted over a year ago, as a demonstration of support for their ally Hamas. While most attacks have been intercepted, Israeli air defenses have occasionally failed to stop incoming missiles and drones.

The Israeli military has conducted multiple strikes on targets in Yemen, including ports and energy facilities in Houthi-controlled areas.
