The Israeli cabinet has postponed its meeting to approve a ceasefire deal with Hamas, accusing the group of creating a "last-minute crisis" by retracting certain terms from the agreement.
"Hamas has backtracked on several terms agreed upon with mediators and Israel, aiming to secure last-minute concessions. This situation has caused a last-minute crisis," the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated today.
According to a January 15 announcement from the three mediating countries— the United States, Qatar, and Egypt—Israel and Hamas were set to sign a three-phase ceasefire agreement. The Israeli cabinet had initially planned to convene on January 16 to approve the deal.
However, Netanyahu's office announced that the meeting had been delayed due to Hamas' changes.
"The Israeli cabinet will reconvene to approve the ceasefire and hostage release agreement only after mediators confirm that Hamas has agreed to all terms," the prime minister's office added. It did not specify which terms Hamas allegedly sought to alter. Netanyahu's office had earlier stated that "some provisions remain unresolved" and that negotiations in Qatar were ongoing.
In response, senior Hamas official Izzat el-Reshiq asserted that the group would abide by the ceasefire agreement as announced by mediators.
The agreement outlines that, during the first 42-day phase, Hamas will gradually release 33 hostages, while Israel withdraws troops from densely populated areas in Gaza, facilitating dialogue and enabling civilians to return to their homes. The number of Palestinian prisoners to be released in exchange for Israeli hostages during the second and third phases will be determined at the end of the first phase.
The conflict in Gaza, now in its 15th month, has resulted in over 46,700 deaths and more than 110,000 injuries. Qatar, alongside the U.S. and Egypt, has been working as a mediator to broker the ceasefire for several months.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office on January 20, announced plans to leverage the Gaza ceasefire as a foundation for expanding the Abraham Accords, a U.S.-mediated initiative established during his first presidential term from 2017 to 2021 to normalize relations between Israel and several Arab nations.
If the ceasefire proceeds smoothly, Palestinians, Arab nations, and Israel will still need to agree on a post-conflict vision for Gaza. This will involve significant security assurances for Israel and billions of dollars in reconstruction investments.
