Macron Urges ‘Decisive Action’ If Russia Keeps Rejecting Peace

French President Emmanuel Macron is calling for stronger measures against Russia, accusing Moscow of escalating its assault on Ukraine and ignoring international peace efforts.

"I send my condolences to the children and victims of Russia’s attacks, including the deadly strike on Kryvyi Rih on April 4," Macron wrote on social media platform X on April 6.

Macron said Ukraine had agreed to a full ceasefire proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, and claimed that while European nations are working to finalize a peace deal, Russia "continues hostilities with renewed intensity, showing no regard for civilian lives."

"A ceasefire must be achieved as soon as possible. We must act decisively if Russia continues to stall and reject peace," the French president warned.

The Kremlin has not publicly responded to Macron’s remarks.

Russia’s defense ministry said it carried out a "precision strike" in Kryvyi Rih on April 4 targeting "a gathering of senior Ukrainian commanders and Western instructors." Ukrainian officials, however, reported that a missile hit a residential area near a children’s playground, killing 20 people—including nine children.

Kryvyi Rih, located roughly 60 kilometers from the front lines, has frequently been targeted by Russian missiles and drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on April 6 that Russia launched another large-scale missile and drone barrage overnight, killing two people and injuring seven others. "The number of Russian airstrikes is rising, which means current pressure on Moscow is not enough," he said.

Zelensky also expressed frustration over the lack of response from Washington regarding Russia’s rejection of the proposed full ceasefire. "We’re waiting for the U.S. to react, but so far, there’s been nothing," he added.

President Trump has been pushing for a partial ceasefire agreement between Kyiv and Moscow, though no mutually acceptable deal has been reached. Meanwhile, the U.S. appears to be quietly seeking to thaw relations with Russia. Last week, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev became the highest-ranking Russian official to visit the U.S. since the war began.
