Melania Trump Chooses American Designer for Inauguration Outfit

As she returns to the White House for her second term as First Lady, Melania Trump has opted for attire from an American fashion brand established just over a decade ago.

Melania, 54, originally from Slovenia, is only the second immigrant to serve as First Lady in U.S. history. During her husband Donald Trump’s first term, she frequently wore outfits from European designers such as Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen, a choice that contrasted with her husband's "Buy American" messaging.

At the January 20 inauguration of President Trump’s second term, Melania wore a navy blue coat and dress by Adam Lippes, paired with a wide-brimmed navy hat with white trim by Eric Javits, and black leather gloves. While Javits is a well-established New York-based brand with over 40 years in the business, Lippes is a relatively new name, founded just over a decade ago and named after its New York-born designer—sharing Trump’s home state.

“This choice is a stark departure from selecting a powerhouse like Ralph Lauren, who dressed the First Lady for the 2017 inauguration,” noted Jose Criales Unzueta, fashion editor at Vogue.

From High Fashion to Independent Designers

For the 2017 inauguration, Melania donned a pale blue Ralph Lauren dress and coat, her hair styled in a sleek updo—a look that drew comparisons to former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s timeless style.

Melania has previously worn Adam Lippes, including a black-and-white striped blouse during a summer trip to New York last year. The brand is one of the few American labels she embraced during Trump’s first term. “Her choice of Lippes signals a continued interest in engaging with the fashion community in her own way. This move reaffirms her influence as First Lady in spotlighting independent and emerging American brands, much like some of her predecessors,” Unzueta commented.

Anticipation for a Glamorous White House Era

The return of the former supermodel has sparked anticipation for another four years of glamorous style under the Trump administration.

“She’s one of the most stunning women to have ever graced the White House,” said Jayme Franklin, founder and CEO of Conservateur, a platform exploring the intersection of fashion and politics. “I would put her on par with Jacqueline Kennedy. Her style never fails to captivate.”

Franklin credited Melania and Ivanka Trump as inspirations for launching her platform. “The Trump White House had so many beautiful women. They dressed impeccably—intelligent, elegant, and polished,” she said.
