Mixed Reactions to Biden's Farewell Address

President Joe Biden delivered his farewell address from the Oval Office on January 15, reflecting on nearly five decades of public service and expressing hope that his legacy would endure. He warned against the growing concentration of power among America's ultra-wealthy and the spread of "misinformation," which he said was leading to "abuses of power."

The address, Biden's final speech from the Oval Office, sparked polarized reactions across the U.S. While Republicans criticized his message as "disastrous and laughable," Democrats praised it as one of his finest speeches.

Republican Criticism

“It’s ironic that Joe Biden spoke about democracy, press freedom, institutions, and abuses of power in his farewell speech,” Republican Representative Nancy Mace wrote on X, referencing Biden's "abuse of power," particularly with his full pardon of his son, Hunter Biden.

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld described Biden's farewell as "a shameful end to his presidency."

“Every time he speaks, things get worse. Running him for president in 2024 was the riskiest and worst decision of our lives,” conservative commentator Clay Travis said. Biden had entered the 2024 race against Republican Donald Trump but withdrew in late July amid mounting opposition, handing the reins to Vice President Kamala Harris.

"His speech was unremarkable and divisive," said Gabriella Hoffman, director at the Center for Energy and Conservation at the Independent Women’s Forum. Hoffman expressed relief that Biden’s term was ending, accusing him of failing to unite the country and enacting policies that weakened America.

Democratic Praise

Democrats viewed Biden’s farewell in a starkly different light.

“Four years ago, we needed a leader with integrity who could put politics aside and do what was right. That’s exactly what Joe Biden did,” former President Barack Obama said in praise of his former vice president.

In his speech, Biden warned of the rise of a “plutocracy” in America, where power is dangerously concentrated in the hands of a wealthy few, posing a threat to democracy and equality. While Biden avoided naming individuals, some observers interpreted his remarks as a critique of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet and advisory team, which includes several billionaires like Elon Musk, set to lead the Government Efficiency Board.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lauded Biden's address, calling it a tribute to “the vision of America’s founders, the sacrifices of servicemen and women, and an inspiration for future generations.”

Liberal commentator Harry Sisson described the speech as Biden’s “best address” of his presidency.

“Such a moving farewell. I will always be grateful to President Biden and his incredible administration. Thank you for serving and giving America four great years,” Sisson said.

Biden’s Closing Message

Biden ended his speech with a call to action for Americans to protect democracy.

“America is a nation of institutional strength, built on the values and character of its people. That must endure,” Biden said. “Now is the time to rise up and safeguard it. Keep the flame alive, keep the faith. I love this country, and I know you do too.”

With four days left in office, Biden is preparing to hand over the presidency to Donald Trump.
