Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises Above 3,300
At least 3,354 people have been confirmed dead in Myanmar following last week's powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake, according to state media reports on April 5. More than 4,850 people have been injured and 220 remain missing.
The quake struck on March 28 with its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. It flattened buildings, damaged infrastructure, and left thousands homeless across the central region of the country.
Tom Fletcher, the United Nations' top humanitarian coordinator in Myanmar, visited Mandalay on April 4 and praised the work of local aid groups and volunteers. “The devastation is overwhelming. The world must come together to support the people of Myanmar,” he wrote on X.
Local aid worker Ko Zeyar said many people remain trapped under rubble. “The smell of dead bodies is everywhere,” he said. Witnesses described mass burials for victims as communities race to cope with the overwhelming death toll.
Survivors continue to sleep outdoors, with daily temperatures topping 98°F (37°C) and aftershocks still rattling the region. “Almost everyone is living and sleeping in the streets, at train stations, or on soccer fields,” Zeyar added. “I don’t even sleep inside. I stay by the doorway in case I need to run.”
The disaster adds a new layer of crisis to a country already reeling from four years of civil conflict, with nearly 20 million people in need of humanitarian assistance even before the earthquake struck.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said Myanmar’s healthcare system is overwhelmed, with shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies becoming increasingly urgent. Authorities have declared a ceasefire with rebel groups from April 2 to April 22 to allow for relief efforts to reach affected areas.
