A DHC-8 aircraft carrying dozens of passengers experienced landing gear failure while landing at an airport in eastern Canada, causing it to skid along the runway and catch fire.
The DHC-8, operated by PAL Airlines of the Philippines on behalf of Air Canada, encountered the issue while landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia, eastern Canada.
Passenger Nikki Valentine recounted that the plane failed to deploy one side of its landing gear. "The plane started tilting to the left upon touchdown, accompanied by a loud noise resembling an impact. The wing skidded along the edge of the runway, along with what I assume was the engine," she recalled.
Valentine added that the aircraft skidded "a considerable distance" as the crew attempted to bring it to a stop. "The plane shook quite violently, and we started seeing smoke and flames rising from the left side of the aircraft," she said.
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, evacuating passengers safely and taking them to a nearby hangar for health checks. No injuries were reported.
The exact number of passengers on board is unclear, but Valentine estimated around 80 people. She described the plane as having about 20 rows of seats, most of which were occupied.
"One side of the plane caught fire, so everyone rushed out. The evacuation was quick, lasting about two minutes, and orderly," she noted.
Halifax Airport was closed following the incident but reopened one runway by the morning of December 29.
