Poland Accuses Russia of Mocking Trump’s Peace Efforts in Ukraine

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Russia is “mocking” former President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker peace in Ukraine by escalating missile attacks, despite calls for a ceasefire.

“More than a month ago, Ukraine agreed to an unconditional ceasefire. Russia’s strikes on Kryvyi Rih and Sumy are a mocking response to that gesture,” Sikorski said on April 15, ahead of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg.

His remarks came days after Russia launched two ballistic missiles at the city center of Sumy on April 13, killing at least 34 people and injuring 117, according to Ukrainian officials. Earlier this month, a missile strike on Kryvyi Rih left 18 dead and 72 wounded.

“I hope President Donald Trump and the U.S. administration recognize that Russian leadership is not engaging in good faith. I also hope they make the right decisions moving forward,” Sikorski added.

Since early February, Trump has pushed for renewed peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. While both sides have made limited commitments—including avoiding strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure—a comprehensive ceasefire has not been reached. Each side has accused the other of violating those informal agreements.

The attack on Sumy came just two days after Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, visited Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

When asked about the strike, Trump called the incident “horrible” and said, “they made a mistake,” but stopped short of directly blaming Russia. He previously urged both parties to stop making “empty statements” and focus on taking meaningful steps toward peace.

Following the Sumy strike, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for “maximum pressure” on Moscow to end the war. “Everyone who wants this war to stop should push as hard as possible,” she said in Luxembourg.
