President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal to former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney on January 2, recognizing her contributions to the nation and her role in the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot. Cheney was also honored for her vocal defense of American democracy.

While announcing her name for the award, Cheney was described as someone who "put the people above partisanship." The former congresswoman received a standing ovation in the room as she stood next to President Biden.

In addition to Cheney, Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson, who chaired the House Select Committee on the January 6 insurrection, also received the medal for his "lifetime commitment to protecting the Constitution."

The Presidential Citizens Medal is awarded to Americans who have performed exemplary acts of service to the nation and its people. It is the second-highest civilian honor in the United States, following the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Cheney's receipt of the medal from President Biden has sparked additional criticism from within the Republican Party. Republican Senator John Barrasso remarked that Cheney "does not deserve" the medal, accusing her of "representing division."

As a congresswoman, Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, frequently criticized former President Donald Trump and rejected his claims of fraud in the 2020 election. In January 2021, she was one of 10 Republican members in the House who joined Democrats in voting to impeach Trump for inciting the riot.

Last year, Cheney campaigned alongside Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to appeal to disillusioned Republican voters.
