President-elect Donald Trump Arrives at the White House for Traditional Tea with Biden

Outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden welcomed President-elect Donald Trump to the White House on January 20 for a tea ceremony, according to The Guardian. The tradition of the outgoing president hosting their successor for tea on Inauguration Day has long been a hallmark of peaceful transitions of power in the United States. However, in 2020, Trump broke with tradition, refusing to acknowledge Biden’s victory and skipping the Democratic president’s inauguration.

As Trump arrived at the White House, Biden reportedly greeted him with the words, “Welcome home,” according to Sky News. After sharing tea, the two leaders will travel together in the same vehicle to the U.S. Capitol for the inauguration ceremony.

Earlier in the day, outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, greeted incoming Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, at the White House.

At approximately noon (local time), or midnight on January 21 in Hanoi, Trump will officially take the oath of office to become the 47th President of the United States. Due to freezing temperatures, the ceremony will be held indoors in the Capitol Rotunda rather than outside as is traditional.

Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath of office. Trump will place his hand on two Bibles: one used by Abraham Lincoln during his 1861 inauguration and another gifted to Trump by his late mother in 1955. Just before Trump’s oath, Vice President JD Vance will be sworn in, using a Bible belonging to his great-grandfather.

Following his inauguration, Trump is set to deliver a speech outlining his vision for the nation and the goals he intends to pursue during his second term. After the speech, while the Biden family departs the Capitol to return to private life, Trump will begin signing his first executive orders as president in the Capitol’s Presidential Room.
