President-elect Donald Trump Revives Push for U.S. to Buy Greenland

President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his desire for the United States to acquire Greenland, the world’s largest island, citing its importance for "national security and global peace."

During his first term in office, Trump floated the idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland from Denmark multiple times. In 2019, he seriously proposed the acquisition, suggesting Denmark might welcome the "lucrative real estate deal" to ease its budgetary burden. The proposal strained diplomatic relations between Washington and Copenhagen.

Less than a month before the start of his second term, Trump reignited the controversial idea in a TruthSocial post on December 22, while nominating businessman Ken Howery as the U.S. ambassador to Denmark.

“For the sake of national security and freedom across the world, it is imperative that the United States owns and controls Greenland. Ken will passionately represent America’s interests,” Trump wrote.

Howery, co-founder of PayPal, was praised by Trump as a “renowned entrepreneur and investor.” He also co-founded the venture capital firm Founders Fund, which has backed tech companies like SpaceX, Facebook, and Airbnb. Howery previously served as U.S. ambassador to Sweden during the final two years of Trump’s first term.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark since 1814, is the largest island in the world, spanning approximately 2.16 million square kilometers. Located near North America, between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, it has a population of around 57,000.

The island is believed to hold vast natural resources, including iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare earth elements, uranium, and oil. Most of these resources remain untapped as 80% of Greenland is covered by ice. Researchers also estimate the seabed around the island contains significant oil reserves. Since 1967, multiple U.S. administrations have considered or proposed agreements with Denmark to acquire Greenland.

The U.S. established Thule Air Base in western Greenland in 1951, about 1,200 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. The base is equipped with radar systems for early detection of intercontinental ballistic missiles targeting the U.S. In 2020, the U.S. Air Force transferred control of the base to the U.S. Space Force, renaming it Pituffik Space Base.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during a visit to Greenland in 2019, firmly declared that the island "is not for sale."
