Republican Lawmakers Urge Trump to Prevent Chaos in the House

A group of Republican lawmakers is calling on Donald Trump to intervene and prevent potential chaos in the upcoming election for Speaker of the House, a scenario that could disrupt the certification of his presidential victory.

"I hope President Trump will reach out to those still hesitant and tell them, 'We need to move forward; we’re out of time,'" said Republican Representative Carlos Gimenez in an interview with Fox News on December 23, referring to the looming disorder surrounding the upcoming vote for Speaker of the House.

On January 3, 2025, the House of Representatives will elect a new Speaker, who will then preside over the swearing-in ceremony for all 435 newly elected members of Congress. However, many Republican lawmakers are concerned that they may not be able to quickly elect a Speaker, potentially delaying the swearing-in process.

While Republicans hold the majority in the House, divisions within the party over the leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson have sparked uncertainty. Johnson recently faced backlash after negotiating quietly with Democrats on a budget bill, which nearly plunged Capitol Hill into chaos.

On December 20, the House narrowly passed the budget bill just hours before the deadline, avoiding the first government shutdown since 2018. The vote came after two failed attempts, reflecting internal divisions within the Republican caucus.

Over the past two years of Republican control in the House, both Speaker elections have been marked by turmoil and delays due to internal party disagreements.

In January 2023, Kevin McCarthy endured 15 rounds of voting before finally being elected Speaker, following a rebellion by far-right Republican lawmakers.

After McCarthy resigned in late 2023, the GOP endured three weeks of internal strife that left the House paralyzed until Mike Johnson was selected as his successor.

"If disputes continue during the upcoming vote for Speaker, we won’t be able to elect a new leader, and members won’t be sworn in. Without being sworn in, we can’t certify the presidential election results," warned Representative Gimenez.

On January 6, 2025, Congress is scheduled to hold a joint session to count electoral votes and officially confirm Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election. If the new House fails to organize and swear in its members by that date, the certification of Trump’s victory could be delayed.

Representative Pat Fallon of Texas expressed concerns about ongoing GOP disunity in the lead-up to the Speaker election. He urged President-elect Trump to publicly support Johnson or invite him to Mar-a-Lago over Christmas to persuade hesitant lawmakers to prioritize the party’s collective interests.

"To ensure President Trump is inaugurated and can begin his work smoothly on January 20, 2025, we must certify the presidential election results on January 6, 2025. If we don’t elect a Speaker, this process can’t proceed," cautioned Representative Claudia Tenney of New York.

Republicans hold 220 seats in the House, compared to 215 for Democrats. A Speaker needs at least 218 votes to win. If all Democratic members and three Republican lawmakers oppose Johnson, he will fail to secure reelection.

Thomas Massie, one of Johnson’s most vocal critics, has vowed not to vote for him at any point over the next two years. Meanwhile, Andy Harris, leader of the Republican Study Committee, and Representative Michael Cloud of Texas have also declined to commit their support for Johnson in the upcoming vote.
