South Korea Sends Jeju Air Plane's Black Box to the U.S.

South Korean authorities announced they will send one of the black boxes from the crashed Jeju Air flight to the United States for data analysis.

"The flight data recorder (FDR) was severely damaged and cannot be restored to extract information. We have agreed to send it to the United States for data analysis in collaboration with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)," Joo Jong-wan, South Korea's Deputy Minister for Civil Aviation, stated today.

Joo previously confirmed that South Korean officials had completed the "initial data extraction process" from the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of the crashed Jeju Air plane. "We will convert the preliminary data into audio format," he said, indicating that investigators will be able to listen to the final exchanges between the two pilots.

Each aircraft is equipped with two devices: one to record cockpit audio and another for flight data. Despite being called black boxes, these devices are painted orange for easy identification and retrieval in the event of an accident.

The Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air crash-landed on its belly on December 29, skidding along the runway before crashing into a concrete barrier at the edge of Muan International Airport and bursting into flames. The disaster claimed the lives of 179 out of 181 people on board, making it the deadliest aviation accident on South Korean soil.

Initial assessments suggest the crash may have been caused by a bird strike, but experts have also pointed to the concrete barrier at the end of the runway as a potential factor. Videos show the Boeing 737-800 breaking apart and catching fire upon collision with the structure. South Korean authorities are investigating the role and potential impact of the concrete barrier in the accident.
