The South Korean Presidential Security Service (PSS) has turned President Yoon Suk-yeol's residence in Hannam-dong into what some are calling a "fortress," reinforcing it with barriers and razor wire amid concerns about heightened efforts by law enforcement to execute an arrest warrant against him.
According to Yonhap News Agency on January 7, the PSS has significantly bolstered security around the presidential residence. Images show multiple new obstacles installed at the entrance. A bus has been positioned across the main gate, followed by three buses forming a line and another bus placed horizontally to block any vehicle or individual from entering. Additionally, layers of razor wire have been deployed in certain areas, likely to prevent investigators from using side paths to approach the residence.
The measures have fueled doubts about whether South Korean authorities can successfully enforce the arrest warrant after their failed attempt on January 3.
Proposed Arrest Strategies
Min Gwan-ki, former head of the National Police Union, suggested a multi-day operation to carry out the arrest.
"We could enforce the warrant over a four-day, three-night period, gradually dismantling the protective barriers and detaining 10-20 guards at a time. If the police encounter resistance at the outer perimeter, special forces could use helicopters or other means to bypass the remaining defenses," Min said.
Other police officers proposed less confrontational methods to minimize the risk of clashes.
"Officers armed with tasers, handcuffs, batons, and bulletproof vests should use ladders to scale barriers instead of deploying heavy vehicles to break through. Neutralizing one guard would require 4-6 officers, so the operation would need a force at least twice the size of the defending personnel," one officer suggested.
Tensions at the Presidential Residence
On January 3, approximately 20 investigators and 80 police officers arrived at the presidential residence to enforce the arrest warrant. However, the PSS mobilized over 200 personnel and 10 vehicles to block access, coordinating with military units guarding the residence to erect barriers.
Following a standoff, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) announced a temporary suspension of the warrant's execution, citing the need to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of its personnel.
The PSS has vowed to continue resisting the warrant, accusing investigators of trespassing and executing what they claim is an unlawful order against the sitting president.
