Subway Tunnel Collapse in South Korea Traps Worker 30 Meters Underground

A section of a subway tunnel under construction in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, collapsed on Friday, trapping one worker underground and damaging nearby buildings.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:17 p.m. near the Yangji intersection in Gwangmyeong, where crews were working on the new Sinansan subway line at a depth of 30 meters. The collapse caused the road above to cave in, leading to structural damage at surrounding commercial properties.

Authorities had already shut down roads connecting Gwangmyeong and Anyang earlier in the day after detecting signs of potential ground subsidence near the construction zone.

Seventeen workers were inspecting the site’s safety when the tunnel gave way. Initial reports said five workers were unaccounted for, but three were later confirmed safe. Rescue teams established contact with one of the two trapped workers, while the condition of the second remains unknown.

Prior to the collapse, workers reported strange noises and damage to the tunnel’s support systems. In response, authorities expanded the exclusion zone and began evacuations around noon.

Police have not reported any injuries in nearby buildings. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collapse and assess safety conditions throughout the site.

Once completed, the Sinansan subway line will span 29.7 kilometers, linking Seoul with its satellite cities Gwangmyeong, Ansan, and Siheung. The first phase, running from Sa District in Ansan to Yeouido Station in Seoul, is expected to open by the end of 2026.
