Top U.S. Intelligence General Fired Without Explanation
General Timothy Haugh, head of the National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. Cyber Command, has been dismissed by the Pentagon, officials confirmed Thursday, without providing a reason for his removal.
“The Department of Defense thanks General Timothy Haugh for his decades of service to the nation, culminating in his leadership of U.S. Cyber Command and the NSA. We wish him and his family all the best,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a brief statement on April 4.
In his farewell letter to staff, Haugh urged personnel at both the NSA and Cyber Command to continue supporting President Donald Trump and to advance the administration’s national security priorities.
“Now more than ever, the Command and the NSA need your courage, conviction, and sacrifice,” he wrote.
Lieutenant General William Hartman, Haugh’s deputy at Cyber Command, has been named acting NSA Director.
News of Haugh’s ouster first surfaced on April 3 in The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources. Senior members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, including Rep. Jim Himes and Sen. Mark Warner, later confirmed the firing.
According to U.S. media outlets, far-right activist Laura Loomer reportedly urged President Trump to fire Haugh during a recent visit to the White House. Some of Trump’s close advisers have also pushed for Haugh’s removal, citing his alleged ties to retired General Mark Milley, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a critic of Trump.
Loomer took to social media on April 4 to publicly accuse Haugh of being aligned with Milley, claiming without evidence that he had been appointed under former President Joe Biden and personally chosen by Milley — and therefore, she argued, should have no place in a Trump administration.
