Truck Explodes Outside Trump Hotel, One Dead

USA: At least one person was killed and seven others injured when a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside former President Trump’s hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Las Vegas Police Chief Kevin McMahill stated that authorities received reports of a vehicle fire at the Trump International Hotel around 8:40 AM on January 1. Upon arrival, emergency responders found a Tesla Cybertruck engulfed in flames.

"One person was found deceased inside the Cybertruck, though it is unclear whether the victim was male or female," McMahill said, adding that the incident left seven others with minor injuries.

Social media videos captured the Cybertruck suddenly exploding while parked outside the hotel entrance, followed by a series of smaller explosions resembling fireworks. Police are investigating the cause and considering the possibility of a terrorist act.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that the explosion was caused by "a large quantity of fireworks and/or a bomb" inside the vehicle, not a defect in the Tesla itself, and revealed that the Cybertruck was a rental. "Our senior leadership team is investigating the explosion. We’ve never seen anything like this before," Musk wrote on social media.

Unveiled by Tesla in November 2019, the Cybertruck is a futuristic, angular electric pickup truck with sports car-level acceleration and a range of over 800 kilometers per charge.

CNN, citing an anonymous official, reported that the vehicle had driven past the Trump hotel about an hour before the incident. It later returned, stopped briefly in front of the hotel, and then exploded. The explosives in the truck were reportedly fireworks, gasoline canisters, and camping fuel, connected to a detonating mechanism controlled by the driver.

Eric Trump, Executive Vice President of the Trump Organization, emphasized that the safety and well-being of guests and staff are "top priorities" and thanked authorities for their "swift and professional response."

The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the explosion and directed federal agencies to provide any necessary support to local authorities. Earlier, Biden had also been updated on a separate vehicle ramming incident in New Orleans, Louisiana, which left at least 15 people dead.

Chief McMahill referenced the New Orleans incident but did not comment on whether the two events were connected. He assured the public that police are taking "every precaution to ensure community safety."

"There doesn’t appear to be any ongoing threat to the public at this time. However, given the involvement of a Cybertruck and the Trump Hotel, there are obviously many questions that need answers," McMahill said, adding that the Trump Hotel was evacuated as a precaution.
