The transition team for President-elect Donald Trump has unveiled his official portrait as the 47th President of the United States, drawing comparisons to his 2023 mugshot taken during a criminal case.
On January 16, just four days before the inauguration, the Trump transition team released official portraits of both Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.
"In just four days, Donald Trump and JD Vance will be sworn in as the 47th president and 50th vice president of the United States. Here are their official portraits," the statement read.
Striking Similarities to Mugshot
In the portrait, Trump is seen leaning slightly forward, eyebrows furrowed, lips pressed tightly together, and staring directly into the camera. The image bears a striking resemblance to his mugshot taken at Atlanta’s Fulton County Jail in 2023, when he faced charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
However, some notable differences include Trump wearing a blue tie and an American flag lapel pin on his navy suit, contrasting with the red tie he wore in the mugshot.
A Mugshot That Went Viral
Trump’s 2023 mugshot became iconic after his release on $200,000 bail. At the time, he shared the photo on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), captioned “Never Surrender.” The post marked his return to the platform after being banned following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. His account was reinstated after Elon Musk purchased Twitter and rebranded it as X.
The mugshot quickly became a cultural phenomenon, widely shared online and printed on merchandise ranging from t-shirts and mugs to stickers and beverage coolers. It remains one of the most recognized images of a U.S. president.
