Trump Accuses Iran of Stalling in Nuclear Talks

President Donald Trump criticized the pace of nuclear negotiations with Iran, accusing Tehran of deliberately dragging its feet.

“Iran wants a deal with us, but they don’t know how to get there. They really don’t know what to do,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on April 14. “We had a meeting with them last Saturday, and another one is planned for this coming Saturday. That’s a long gap. So I think they’re just trying to buy time.”

Despite more optimistic statements from both delegations, Trump struck a pessimistic tone. Negotiators from the U.S. and Iran said their April 12 meeting in Muscat, Oman — led by White House envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi — had been “constructive.”

When asked whether he agreed with that assessment, Trump did not comment directly. Instead, he reiterated that Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons and warned that the U.S. would consider “very strong measures” if necessary.

“It’s very simple: they can’t have nukes. They need to move quickly because they’re getting close — but they won’t get there,” he said.

Asked if military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities was on the table, Trump replied, “Absolutely.”

According to an unnamed Italian official, the next round of talks is scheduled for April 19 in Rome.

The renewed negotiations come as Iran seeks relief from crippling economic sanctions, while Trump continues his “maximum pressure” campaign and keeps the threat of military force on the table.

Iran has repeatedly rejected direct talks with the U.S., opting instead for indirect communication through intermediaries. On April 5, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran is open to dialogue with Washington on an equal footing, but remains skeptical of American intentions.

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) saw Iran agree to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump withdrew the U.S. from the deal during his first term and reimposed sanctions, prompting Tehran to gradually roll back its nuclear commitments.
