President-elect Donald Trump and his allies on January 20 condemned outgoing President Joe Biden for issuing preventive pardons during his final hours in office. "This is terrible," Trump told NBC News, accusing many individuals on the pardon list of "significant wrongdoing."

Earlier, in his final moments at the White House, President Biden issued preventive pardons to several individuals who could face potential targeting under the Trump administration.

The list included former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, who had been a vocal critic of Trump; Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former head of America’s Covid-19 response; and former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, who played a key role in investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.

"Our nation depends every day on dedicated, selfless public servants. They are the lifeblood of our democracy," Biden stated when announcing the pardons.

The preventive pardons were issued to individuals who have not been under investigation. The move is widely seen as a protective measure to shield them from possible retaliation under Trump’s incoming administration.

James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, was especially critical of the pardon granted to Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin. Raskin was a member of the January 6 investigation committee and spearheaded two impeachment efforts against Trump.

"It is entirely inappropriate that Biden’s final act was a preventive pardon for Jamie Raskin—the chief architect of two unfair impeachment attempts against the newly elected 47th President of the United States," Comer said, according to The Guardian.
