President-elect Donald Trump voiced support for billionaire Elon Musk in an internal debate over the H1B visa program.

"I’ve always liked H1B and supported it. That’s why there are so many H1B visas at my facilities. I believe in H1B and have used it many times. It’s a great program," Trump said during an interview on December 28.

The H1B visa is a non-immigrant visa issued by the U.S. government, allowing companies to hire highly skilled foreign workers for specific periods. It typically lasts three years, with options for renewal or conversion to permanent residency.

The program has sparked internal conflict between Musk, a South African-born immigrant who came to the U.S. under H1B, and Trump’s "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) supporters, including far-right activist Laura Loomer and former congressman Matt Gaetz. While far-right factions advocate abolishing H1B, Musk's Tesla received 724 H1B visas this year alone. The controversy intensified after Trump appointed Indian-American venture capitalist Sriram Krishnan as an advisor on artificial intelligence (AI) policy for the new administration.

Loomer criticized the decision, saying, "Looking forward to the inevitable breakup between Trump and Big Tech. We must protect Trump from these technocrats."

In response, Musk declared on his social media platform X on December 27, "I will fight this. The reason I and many other important individuals who helped build SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of companies that make America strong are here is thanks to H1B."

The debate highlights a growing rift among Trump supporters vying for his favor. While Trump has historically taken a hardline stance on immigration, including limiting access to H1B visas during his first term citing potential abuses, his current openness toward skilled legal immigration marks a nuanced shift.
