Donald Trump reiterated his proposal for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States just hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
"Many Canadians want to become the 51st state of America. The U.S. cannot continue bearing the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada relies on to survive. Justin Trudeau understood this, which is why he resigned," U.S. President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on January 6, shortly after Trudeau announced his plans to step down.
Trump emphasized that Canadians would benefit from this scenario, particularly in terms of security and economic relief. "If Canada merges with the U.S., there will be no more tariffs, and taxes will go down," he wrote. "Together, we will have a truly great nation."
Trudeau earlier announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party and as prime minister. He will step down after his party selects a successor, aiming to end the internal strife plaguing his government.
The decision comes amid declining approval ratings throughout the past year, largely driven by public dissatisfaction over rising living costs and soaring inflation.
"The country deserves strong options in the next general election. If I remain embroiled in internal battles, I cannot be the best choice for the people in the upcoming election," Trudeau stated.
Trump had floated the idea of Canada merging with the U.S. during a meeting with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago in late November 2024, following his threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports.
Trudeau’s resignation comes just two weeks before Trump is set to assume the U.S. presidency. This leaves Trudeau with no significant role in negotiations to defuse Trump’s tariff threats, according to David MacNaughton, Canada’s former ambassador to the U.S.
MacNaughton argued that Trudeau should have announced his decision months earlier to allow Canada’s government more time to prepare for Trump’s presidency. "The moment Trudeau declared his resignation, his power and influence evaporated. We’re facing several months of instability while Trump grows more emboldened," he said.
Xavier Delgado, a senior fellow at the Canada Institute of the Wilson Center in the U.S., warned that Canada is in a vulnerable position as Trudeau’s departure coincides with Trump’s imminent inauguration.
"By announcing his resignation, Trudeau has made himself a lame-duck prime minister. He no longer holds the authority to represent Canada effectively in negotiations, especially when his counterparts in Washington know he will soon exit the political stage," Delgado observed. "Given the current state of U.S.-Canada relations, this decision is extremely shortsighted."
