Donald Trump has expressed his desire to rename Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, after former President William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901.
The U.S. President-elect mentioned the proposal during a conservative activist conference in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 22. Denali, which stands at over 6,190 meters in Alaska, was originally named "Mount McKinley" in 1896 after a prospector heard news of McKinley securing the Republican presidential nomination. The name "Mount McKinley" became official in 1917.
However, in 1975, Alaska’s state government renamed the mountain "Denali," a term from the native Athabascan language meaning "The High One." The Athabascan people have lived near the base of the mountain for thousands of years. Over the decades, Alaskan lawmakers repeatedly petitioned the federal government to officially adopt the name Denali, but these efforts were blocked until 2015.
In 2015, President Barack Obama signed an executive order officially recognizing Denali as the mountain's name, citing McKinley’s lack of historical connection to the mountain or the state of Alaska, as he had never visited the region.
"They removed McKinley’s name from the mountain. He was a great president. My administration will restore the name Mount McKinley because I believe he deserves it," Trump stated.
Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, opposed Trump’s plan to rename the mountain. "There’s only one name that deserves to grace the highest mountain in North America: Denali – The Great One," she posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Democratic State Senator Scott Kawasaki echoed the sentiment, writing, "Oh no. That mountain is Denali."
William McKinley served two terms as governor of Ohio before becoming the U.S. president in 1897. He led the country to victory in the Spanish-American War and implemented protective tariffs to boost American industry. He was assassinated early in his second term in Buffalo, New York, in 1901.
