President Donald Trump on January 31 expressed his condolences following the tragic crash of a medical transport plane in a Philadelphia residential area, which resulted in multiple fatalities.
"Very sad to see the plane crash in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania," Trump wrote on Truth Social late Thursday night.
"More innocent lives lost. Our teams are working in full coordination. First responders have been recognized for doing a great job. There is still much work to do. God bless you all," the president added.
No Survivors Confirmed
According to Reuters, the air ambulance crashed shortly after takeoff, carrying a pediatric patient and five others. Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, the operator of the Learjet 55, confirmed that no survivors have been found.
The Mexico-based company, which is licensed to operate in the U.S., said the plane was transporting:
- A young girl receiving medical treatment in the U.S.
- The girl's mother
- Two pilots
- A doctor
- A paramedic
"At this time, we cannot confirm any survivors," the company stated.
Victims Identified as Mexican Nationals
The Mexican government confirmed that all six people on board were Mexican nationals, according to CNN. The young patient was being flown back home to Tijuana, Mexico, after completing medical treatment in the U.S.
"We are deeply shocked by this tragic event," said Shai Gold, a senior strategy executive at Jet Rescue Air Ambulance.
"This was a highly experienced crew. We are one of the leading air ambulance companies, flying between 600 and 700 missions per year."
Gold added that the company had invested heavily in aircraft maintenance following international safety standards, and the aircraft had passed all required safety checks before the flight.
"We truly don’t know what happened," Gold admitted.
"The patient’s care was funded by a third-party charity organization. She had completed treatment and was on her way home. She fought so hard to survive, and tragically, this happened on her journey back."
Explosion and Damage in Residential Area
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, speaking at a press briefing at the crash site, acknowledged the significant loss of life.
"We know there will be casualties in this area," Shapiro stated. "Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to those who are grieving right now."
The aircraft crashed into a densely populated neighborhood near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, less than 5 km from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The impact caused a massive explosion, setting multiple homes ablaze.
Eyewitness videos from the scene showed scattered body parts on the streets and inside nearby houses.
Second Fatal Crash for Jet Rescue in 15 Months
This marks Jet Rescue’s second fatal crash in just over a year. In 2023, five crew members died when one of the company’s planes overshot the runway in Morelos, Mexico, and crashed into a hillside.
Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initially reported two people aboard but later revised the count to six passengers.
FAA officials confirmed that the Learjet 55 was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri before it vanished from radar just 30 seconds after takeoff at an altitude of 487 meters (1,600 feet).
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
Deadliest U.S. Air Disaster Since 2009
The Philadelphia crash occurred just days after a mid-air collision between an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter over Washington, D.C., killing 67 people—marking the deadliest aviation disaster in the U.S. since 2009.
