Trump Threatens Military Action Against Iran Over Nuclear Program
Former President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could take military action against Iran if Tehran refuses to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
"Absolutely, if necessary. If the military is needed, we will use the military. Obviously, Israel would play a major role in such an operation," Trump told reporters on April 9, when asked whether military action remains on the table.
Trump emphasized that time is running out to reach a new agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and made clear that Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.
"We want to see them do well. I want Iran to thrive and be great. The only thing they can't have is nuclear weapons. They understand that. I was a little surprised—they would probably already have nukes if the 2020 election hadn’t been rigged, because under my administration, we stopped that progress," Trump added, referencing the last presidential election.
Iranian officials have not yet responded to Trump’s remarks. Last month, Trump reportedly sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for negotiations over the nuclear issue and warning of possible military consequences if Tehran declined. Khamenei dismissed the threat, warning that Iran would retaliate against any U.S. aggression.
In follow-up comments, Trump said that if Iran fails to reach a deal, the U.S. would "bomb them like never before" and impose secondary sanctions.
While Iran has repeatedly rejected direct talks with the United States, it has remained open to indirect negotiations through mediators. Still, on April 7, Trump stated his administration plans to engage in direct talks with Tehran. The U.S. State Department later confirmed that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Oman on April 12.
Following a meeting with Trump at the White House on April 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said both leaders agreed that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. "If talks drag on, military action will be inevitable," Netanyahu said.
Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with world powers in 2015, agreeing to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump withdrew the U.S. from the deal during his first term and reimposed tough sanctions. Since returning to the presidency in January, he has resumed his “maximum pressure” campaign to force Iran to abandon its nuclear efforts.
