Trump: “I Don’t Really Need Elon Musk”—But Says He Still Admires Him

President Donald Trump said he doesn’t “really need” Elon Musk in his administration, but made clear he holds the billionaire in high regard.

“Elon Musk has done a fantastic job. Look, he’s sitting here and I don’t mind that. I don’t need Elon Musk for any reason—except that I really like him,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House on April 10.

Trump also shared that he recently bought a Tesla to show support for Musk, despite not needing the car or asking for a discount. Last month, the president purchased a red Tesla Model S and praised it as “a remarkable product that Elon Musk has poured his heart and soul into.”

He reiterated his admiration for Musk, saying the tech mogul “has done an amazing job but hasn’t always been treated fairly.” Trump appointed Musk as a special government advisor and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative aimed at streamlining federal operations.

During the same Cabinet meeting, Musk announced that DOGE plans to cut nearly $150 billion in federal spending for fiscal year 2026, which runs from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. Musk serves in the unpaid role part-time, working fewer than 130 days a year.

DOGE is currently scheduled to operate through July 4, 2026, though recent signs suggest the initiative may be winding down. Many of its staff have already been reassigned to other federal agencies. Trump said Cabinet members will take over responsibilities if Musk steps away, but emphasized that “DOGE will continue to operate.”
