Trump: Trade Tariffs ‘Won’t Be Easy,’ But Promise Historic Results

President Donald Trump on Friday acknowledged that his sweeping new tariffs will bring short-term challenges, but urged Americans to remain firm, pledging that the end result will be a “historic” economic victory.

“This is an economic revolution — and we will win,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It won’t be easy, but stay strong. The end result will be historic.”

His comments came just as the United States’ across-the-board 10% tariff on nearly all imported goods went into effect. The blanket tariff applies to most foreign imports, with exceptions made for products from Mexico and Canada.

“We used to be a weak and passive punching bag. Not anymore,” Trump added. “We’re bringing back jobs and businesses like never before.”

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States was most prosperous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when high tariffs were a primary source of government revenue. According to White House officials, the new tariff policy is intended to shrink the trade deficit, boost domestic manufacturing, and raise federal revenue.

In addition to the 10% baseline, roughly 60 of America’s major trading partners will face even higher retaliatory tariffs starting April 9. The European Union will be hit with a 20% tariff, while China faces an additional 34% surcharge on top of the existing 20% rate.

China quickly responded, announcing it would impose its own 34% tariff on American goods beginning April 10. Beijing also vowed to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and restrict exports of rare earth elements — critical to industries like electronics and healthcare.

“China will suffer more than we will,” Trump wrote. “They, and many other countries, have treated us very badly for too long.”

The new tariffs do not stack on top of existing duties. Items such as steel, aluminum, and imported automobiles, which were already subject to a 25% tariff under Trump’s previous policy, are not affected by the new baseline.

The White House confirmed that key sectors — including copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber, critical minerals, and some energy products — are currently exempt from the new tariffs.
