Authorities in Florida have launched an investigation after two bodies were discovered in the landing gear of a JetBlue passenger plane at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Broward County police responded to the airport late on January 6 following a report that two men had been found inside the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft. The discovery was made around 11:30 PM during routine maintenance checks. Emergency medical personnel on-site confirmed both individuals were deceased.
A law enforcement official stated that the bodies were severely decomposed. The flight originated from New York, and the remains were found during inspections after the plane landed in Florida. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting autopsies to determine the causes of death. Police have not yet released the identities of the two men, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
A Growing Pattern of Stowaway Attempts
This discovery comes about two weeks after a body was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines plane at Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii. The individual had reportedly hidden in the compartment of one of the main landing gear wheels, although how and when they entered remains unknown.
Stowing away in an airplane’s wheel well is a perilous and often fatal practice. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), more than 77% of stowaways attempting this method do not survive.
The landing gear compartment is extremely confined, sometimes smaller than the trunk of a car. As the plane ascends, the situation worsens. Oxygen levels drop dramatically, making it nearly impossible to remain conscious. Temperatures during flight can plunge to as low as -50°C to -60°C, leading to frostbite, hypothermia, or even death due to lack of blood circulation.
Calls for Enhanced Security Measures
Airlines across the U.S. have been urged to bolster security protocols to prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing aircraft prior to takeoff. Despite these measures, incidents involving stowaways in landing gear compartments continue to occur, raising concerns about aviation security.
