U.S. Airstrikes on Houthi Rebels Cost Nearly $1 Billion in Three Weeks
The U.S. military has spent close to $1 billion in just three weeks targeting Houthi militants in Yemen, according to CNN, while facing mounting questions over the effectiveness of the campaign.
The airstrikes, which began March 15, have involved a wide array of high-cost weaponry including long-range JASSM cruise missiles, JSOW glide bombs, and Tomahawk missiles. U.S. B-2 stealth bombers deployed from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean have also been used, and an additional carrier strike group—featuring the USS Carl Vinson—is en route to support operations alongside the USS Harry S. Truman.
Defense officials estimate that at least $200 million worth of munitions have been used so far, and when factoring in operating costs for aircraft carriers, bomber units, and missile defense systems like Patriot and THAAD, the total price tag for the campaign is nearing $1 billion—and could soon exceed it.
Despite the financial and logistical investment, sources told CNN the strikes have had limited impact on Houthi capabilities. While the Pentagon claims to have eliminated some senior leaders and weapons facilities, officials admitted the Houthis continue to operate from fortified underground bases and remain capable of attacking U.S. drones and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
Criticism of the campaign has come from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress, with leaked messages revealing even Vice President JD Vance considers the mission a “mistake.” There is skepticism on Capitol Hill over approving additional funding if the Pentagon requests it.
Earlier this week, the Houthis shot down a second U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone since the start of the airstrikes, further highlighting their persistent operational capacity. The group, backed by Iran, began attacking ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in late 2023 in response to the war in Gaza, disrupting global shipping through the Suez Canal—a route that carries around 12% of global trade.
President Donald Trump has vowed to continue airstrikes until the Houthis cease attacks on international shipping, but so far, their operations show little sign of stopping.
