The United States will mobilize 25,000 law enforcement officers and military personnel, erect 50 kilometers of anti-climbing fencing, and deploy drones to ensure security during Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration on January 20.
Extensive Security Measures
Matt McCool, operations chief for the U.S. Secret Service in Washington, announced on January 13 that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend Trump’s inauguration in the nation’s capital. Guests will include President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former presidents, Supreme Court justices, and members of Congress.
“All attendees will be screened, and checkpoints will be set up for members of the public interested in participating in the inauguration,” McCool stated.
In addition to road closures and parking restrictions, a no-fly zone will be enforced over Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. “We’ll deploy approximately 50 kilometers of anti-climbing fencing, and drones will be utilized for aerial surveillance,” McCool added.
Personnel Deployment
The massive security operation will involve approximately 25,000 personnel, including the entire Washington Metropolitan Police Department, 7,800 National Guard members, and about 4,000 officers from other parts of the country.
“We will not tolerate any acts of violence,” Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith emphasized. “We encourage people to enjoy the city, but those who break the law will be arrested and held accountable.”
David Sundberg, head of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, stated that two command centers will oversee security operations—one at the field office and the other at FBI headquarters.
“We are not currently tracking any specific or credible threats to the inauguration or the Capitol complex,” Sundberg said.
Threats from Lone Actors
Tom Manger, chief of the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP), identified “lone actors” as the most significant threat during Trump’s inauguration.
“Just last week, while former President Jimmy Carter lay in state, two lone actors surfaced at the Capitol. One was armed with a knife and machete, while the other attempted to disrupt the proceedings by setting fire to their car,” Manger explained.
Public Transit Preparedness
Jimmy Clarke, CEO of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), announced that over 900 uniformed security personnel will be deployed across the public transportation system during the inauguration. Metro services will begin operations at 4 a.m. on January 20 to accommodate attendees.
Ensuring a Safe Event
The unprecedented security measures reflect heightened vigilance following past concerns over public safety at major political events. Despite no current credible threats, authorities remain prepared to respond swiftly to any potential disruptions.
