U.S. Lawmaker Drafts Bill to Enable Trump to Buy Greenland

A Republican congressman from Tennessee has introduced a bill to allow President-elect Donald Trump to begin negotiations with Denmark to purchase Greenland.

The bill, titled the "Make Greenland Great Again Act," was authored by Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee and has gained support from 10 Republican colleagues in the House.

“Congress authorizes the President, beginning at 12:01 p.m. on January 20, to pursue negotiations with Denmark to secure the incorporation of Greenland into the United States,” the bill states, according to Reuters. “Within five days of reaching an agreement with Denmark, the President must submit the document and all related materials to the relevant congressional committees.”

For the bill to take effect, it must pass both chambers of Congress and be signed into law by the president. The Republican Party, holding a majority in both the House and Senate as of January 3, is positioned to advance the legislation. President-elect Trump is set to take office on January 20.

“Joe Biden has tarnished our reputation over the past four years,” Ogles told Fox News. “Even before taking office, Trump has declared to the world that ‘America First’ is back. American economic and security interests will no longer take a back seat. House Republicans stand ready to help him deliver on his promises.”

Legal and Strategic Implications

The U.S. Constitution grants Congress authority over federal budgets, meaning the executive branch, including the White House, cannot purchase assets for the federal government without funding appropriated by the House and approved by the Senate.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark located near North America between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, is home to 57,000 people and spans over 2 million square kilometers, making it the world’s largest island.

President-elect Trump has recently revived his interest in purchasing Greenland, citing its importance to U.S. national security. When asked on January 7 if he would rule out economic or military pressure to achieve this goal, Trump replied, “Nothing is off the table.”

Previous Interest in Greenland

During his first term, Trump also floated the idea of buying Greenland, but the suggestion was swiftly dismissed by Danish and Greenlandic leaders. Following Trump’s renewed statements, Greenland’s leadership reiterated that the island “is not for sale.”

Observers note that in addition to national security considerations, Trump may be eyeing Greenland for its vast natural resources, including oil, rare earth elements, uranium, and its strategic location for global shipping routes.
