U.S. Military ‘Prepared to Act’ to Stop Iran from Getting Nuclear Weapons, Says Defense Secretary

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Washington remains hopeful for a diplomatic resolution to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons—but made it clear that the U.S. military stands ready to take action if necessary.

Speaking on April 13, Hegseth called the recent nuclear talks between American and Iranian delegations in Oman “productive and a step forward.” He emphasized that President Donald Trump prefers a peaceful solution, but warned that the U.S. armed forces are capable of launching deep, large-scale operations if required.

“Let me be clear—we don’t want to go down that road,” Hegseth said. “But if it comes to that, we’re ready to act to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb.”

His comments came just days after President Trump said the U.S. could coordinate with Israel on potential military action if diplomatic efforts in Oman fail.

On April 12, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi led Tehran’s delegation in the first direct engagement with U.S. officials since Trump returned to office. The American side was headed by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. The initial talks were held indirectly, with both sides in separate rooms and messages relayed by Oman’s Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi. After the session, the two delegations held a brief face-to-face conversation, and further negotiations are planned for later this week.

The talks come amid Iran’s push to ease crippling economic sanctions, while the Trump administration continues its “maximum pressure” campaign and maintains the threat of military force.

In 2015, Iran and world powers signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. During his first term, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the deal and reimposed heavy sanctions. In response, Iran gradually rolled back its compliance with key nuclear restrictions.
