U.S. Military Could See Record-Breaking $1 Trillion Budget

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Monday that the Pentagon is expected to receive a $1 trillion budget—marking the highest defense allocation in U.S. history.

“For the first time ever, the U.S. Department of Defense budget will hit $1 trillion,” Hegseth wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “President Donald Trump is moving fast to rebuild our military. Every taxpayer dollar will be spent wisely—on lethal weapons and combat readiness.”

President Trump echoed the announcement just hours earlier during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office. Trump said the defense budget for fiscal year 2026 is expected to be “around $1 trillion,” a sharp increase from the $850 billion allocated to the Defense Department this year.

The total national security budget for fiscal year 2025—which includes military spending, nuclear weapons development, and intelligence programs—is currently set at $892 billion.

“We’re going to approve the largest military budget ever,” Trump declared. “Roughly $1 trillion. Never seen anything like it. We’re building a very, very strong military. A lot of weapons and equipment have already been ordered.”

The announcement came as a surprise to many, as the White House’s draft budget is not scheduled for release until late May, and the new fiscal year doesn’t begin until October.

Trump hinted that the dramatic funding increase is made possible by cost savings identified by the Government Optimization and Efficiency Office (DOGE), though he did not specify which programs were cut to make room for the Pentagon's expanded budget.

The Department of Defense is reportedly planning to cut internal spending by 8% annually over the next five years, streamlining operations to reinvest in modernization and advanced weapon systems. The plan includes reducing tens of thousands of civilian positions and consolidating overseas military bases.

Even with the 12% jump to $1 trillion, the U.S. would still fall short of Trump’s own NATO spending target, which calls for each member nation to dedicate 5% of GDP to defense. Based on World Bank data, the U.S. GDP in 2023 was $27.7 trillion—meaning it would need to allocate more than $1.385 trillion to hit that benchmark.
