U.S. Signals It May Step Away From Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States may withdraw from its mediation efforts between Ukraine and Russia if both sides fail to show serious intent toward reaching a peace agreement.

“We need to know whether ending the war in Ukraine is truly possible,” Rubio said on April 18 in Paris following meetings with European and Ukrainian leaders. “In the coming days, the U.S. will engage with all parties to assess that.”

Rubio emphasized that President Donald Trump still wants to see a peaceful resolution between Kyiv and Moscow. However, he warned that the U.S. has other global priorities and is prepared to step back if there are no clear signs of progress.

“If both sides are serious about peace, we will help them,” Rubio said. “If not, we’ll move on. And if peace is not possible, President Trump may decide our part is done.”

Rubio acknowledged that Europe has both the responsibility and the right to help shape the path forward. He pointed to the United Kingdom, France, and Germany as potential contributors to advancing negotiations.

“We understand Ukraine’s desire for security guarantees,” he added. “We all want to avoid the prospect of thousands more deaths in the next year of this war.”

President Trump has recently ramped up efforts to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia. However, nearly 100 days into his second term, the war shows no sign of slowing, and neither side appears close to agreeing on a ceasefire.

As diplomatic efforts continue, Russia has stepped up its missile and drone strikes across Ukraine. Over the weekend, a Russian Iskander missile strike hit the northern city of Sumy, killing multiple people. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it was targeting a gathering of Ukrainian military officers and accused Ukraine of using civilians as “human shields.”

President Trump described the attack on Sumy as a “terrible event” and said Russia “may have made a mistake.” He also placed blame for the ongoing war on both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging both leaders to stop posturing and start genuinely working toward peace.
