UK and France Make 'Real Progress' on Potential Troop Deployment to Ukraine, Zelensky Says
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that Kyiv has made “real progress” in discussions with the United Kingdom and France over the possible deployment of international forces to Ukraine after the war ends.
“There has been substantial progress and initial outlines on how our partners’ security forces might be deployed,” Zelensky announced following high-level talks in Kyiv with British and French military officials.
On April 4, Zelensky met with UK Chief of the Defense Staff Admiral Tony Radakin and French Armed Forces Chief General Thierry Burkhard. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky also attended the meetings, which focused on long-term security assistance for Ukraine once the war is over.
Zelensky thanked both France and the UK for leading efforts to develop post-conflict security guarantees for Ukraine, calling their cooperation “a joint effort to bring lasting and reliable peace to our country.” He added that Western allies are “actively working to ensure Ukraine’s security and deliver credible defense assurances.”
French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have recently spearheaded the idea of deploying “security guarantee forces” to Ukraine following a future peace deal with Russia.
“We’re talking about presence on land, in the air, and at sea. We’re also discussing air defense and some other sensitive issues,” Zelensky said in his Thursday evening address. “We will be holding military meetings every week. Our partners fully understand what Ukraine needs.”
French military chief Thierry Burkhard confirmed the talks, saying they focused on “security guarantee options” provided by an international coalition. “Together, we aim to ensure long-lasting and sustainable peace in Ukraine—a vital condition for Europe’s security,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Burkhard emphasized that the purpose of the Kyiv visit was to reaffirm “unwavering support” for Ukraine as it continues to resist Russian aggression and to help define a “long-term strategy for reconstruction and military reform.”
While Western nations ramp up planning for Ukraine’s post-war future, U.S. President Donald Trump continues to push for a negotiated settlement with Russia. However, talks so far have only produced limited results, including a temporary agreement to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure—far short of a full ceasefire.
