The UK Prime Minister and Ukraine’s President have signed a historic 100-year agreement to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.

“We have signed a groundbreaking agreement today that establishes a new phase in the relationship between the UK and Ukraine, reflecting the deep mutual respect and solidarity between our nations,” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

The agreement aims to bolster collaboration across key sectors such as defense, energy, science, culture, and the economy. It builds upon the 2020 Trade and Cooperation Agreement and a bilateral partnership agreement signed in January 2024.

“Today marks a historic moment as the bond between our two nations grows stronger than ever,” President Zelensky said. Prime Minister Starmer affirmed that the UK would provide Ukraine with more support “than ever before” in 2025. Plans include delivering a mobile air defense system tailored to Ukraine’s needs, jointly developed by the UK and Denmark. British forces will also continue training Ukrainian soldiers.

On the broader issue of ending the conflict in Ukraine, Prime Minister Starmer stressed that “lasting peace” must ensure Ukraine’s security, independence, and sovereignty. He reiterated the UK’s commitment to leading global efforts to guarantee Ukraine’s safety but did not detail specific measures.

This visit marked Prime Minister Starmer’s first trip to Ukraine since assuming office in July 2024. It comes as Ukraine faces mounting challenges on the battlefield, with both Ukraine and Russia ramping up their efforts to gain an advantage ahead of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
